Spring Break Day 1

Welcome to Hilton Head!  We made it!  Don't we look excited?

This vacation is mostly compliments of my father-in-law and his awesome time-share.  Without which we may never see a vacation.  At least a vacation away from family where we would have to pay for accomodations.  We really aren't hotel people.

Because we are staying at a time-share, this also gives us the flexibility to cook our own meals.  This does double-duty: saves us money and also ensures that we will have yummy vegan options no matter where we are!
As we set out from Mooresville, we made a pit stop in Charlotte at the Earth Fare for groceries.  We also ate lunch from the hot bar.  It was just so-so...not quite Whole Foods worthy, but it hit the spot.  This all started after a 5-mile run Saturday morning.  I like to start my vacations on a healthy note-helps to set the tone for the week!

Upon arrival, we immediately checked into our condo, changed into our "Island-wear" and sped off on our bikes to find some grub.  No time for cooking...we were hungry!
We rented bikes for the week.  I heard Hilton Head Island is a very bikeable community and I was so excited to check it out.  I have a new love affair with biking!
Mirrors, mirrors everywhere in our condo.  I went from jeans and t-shirt to Spring Break Fabulous in a matter of minutes:
Biking brings me so much joy.  Especially when I can bike somewhere instead of drive.  Combining exercise with a purpose is the best way to get a workout.  I can burn calories without even considering it!  As we set off on our bikes I could not wipe the silly grin off my face.  I was in heaven!
Lord Forbes really enjoyed biking as well!

Of course no Kummerow family vacation is complete without a trip to a Mellow Mushroom.  We were in a hurry for good food, fast on Saturday night and we sped right over to the local favorite!
Nothing too unusual about our order this time.  We had our typical Tempeh Hoagie and shared a salad.  However, the pretzels did catch our eye and since we were hungry upon arrival we decided to go with half an order for an appetizer.
So this order was half of what?  Because it was still very large.  It came with 3 full sized pretzels and we opted for the sweet cinnamon-sugar and honey pretzels.  I knew I wanted room for my salad and sandwich so I hate half of one.
And then I enjoyed half of a Tempeh Hoagie and half of the field greens salad.
Here's a Mellow Mushroom hint for vegans: their Balsamic Vinagrette is not vegan.  The only vegan dressing they have is vinegar and oil.

By the time we were done eating and on our way home it was already pretty dark.  Biking in the dark is a little scary, especially in an area you are not familiar with.  But the bike paths are wide and even where they aren't well lit it is still possible to navigate.  We promised to not ride at dark anymore during our stay!

After all that biking we were ready for dessert once we made it back to the condo.  Luckily we picked up these vegan treats at Earth Fare earlier in the day:
And somewhere along the way we found ourselves in possession of this:
Of course we have a lot to celebrate: vacation, Lord Forbes' birthday, Easter!
We filled our glasses and enjoyed our bubbly on the porch with dessert.
You can't see the view in the dark...but if you could it would look a little something like this:
Ah, yes...that is what I call vacation!

Cheers!

  1. Looking forward to more of your recap! Hilton Head is one of my favorite places in the world. I'm lucky my parents live there and I can visit often :)
